Mental health Champions
A Mental Health Champion has had additional skills training to help promote positive mental wellbeing where they work. They help create environments where openness, awareness, and support are embedded into everyday practice. Our empowering course develops core skills and competences for supporting mental health, which are strengthened by different follow-up support options.

about the programme
Our Mental Health Champions training is designed for people working in high performance elite sport and corporate environments.
The training helps people to develop the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills needed to support positive mental wellbeing within an organisation.
Participants are often those who are already having supportive conversations and want to develop additional skills alongside their normal role.
Developed and delivered by our HCPC registered clinical psychologists, you will receive high quality training by practitioners who have significant experience in workplace mental health and wellbeing.
The training will support Mental Health Champions with the skills to:
training format
We offer a 2 day and a 3 day version of the MHC training programme and these can be delivered online or in person.
WHAT THE WORKSHOP COVERS:
- Core knowledge: mental health awareness, human development and support systems
- Core skills: people/relationship skills, self-awareness and looking after your own wellbeing
- Putting it into practice: making sense of what’s going on for someone, responding appropriately (including in a crisis), and applying the skills in real situations.
The training combines knowledge development, practical skill-building, and reflective practice to ensure Mental Health Champions feel confident supporting wellbeing conversations and contributing to a more open, supportive culture.
benefits for the organisation
Mental Health Champions help create workplaces where:
- Wellbeing is part of everyday culture.
- Conversations about mental health are normalised, helping teams feel more able to speak up and support one another.
- People feel supported in a clear, appropriate way, with Champions listening, responding within boundaries, and guiding next steps (rather than taking on responsibility).
- Concerns are recognised earlier and handled more confidently.
- Support routes are clearer, with Champions able to signpost colleagues to relevant internal and external support.
This helps embed support into everyday working life, in a way that’s sustainable for both Champions and the organisation.
our impact
Since its launch in 2019, the Mental Health Champions Training Programme has grown from an idea into a sustained source of support across the UK High Performance System and beyond.
In collaboration with UKSI, the programme has trained more than 250 people across the UK, strengthening confidence, skills and capability against the Mental Health Champions competency framework.
Its impact has been felt in some of the most high-pressure sporting environments, with Champions supporting athletes and staff at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games.
What began in elite sport has continued to evolve, creating lasting value across multiple performance and corporate settings.
ongoing support
We know that applying these skills in real environments takes time and support. We work with you to think about how you continue to embed the skills into your environment.
This can include:
- A clear reporting structure for advice or concerns
- Bimonthly reflective practice sessions
- A peer buddy system
- Annual workshops to revisit and strengthen skills
This ongoing support helps maintain confidence, consistency, and impact over time.
